I am afraid that our knee-jerk reaction to his comments will be to discount the message because of the terrible acts of the messenger. However, if we are more interested in peace and security than vengeance and hatred, we will do well to understand the forces that are driving the growing swell of violent Islamic terrorism around the world.
This afternoon I have buried my little cat. Rest in peace, Tippets Satya, little Chocolate-point Siamese puss, daughter of Grand Champion Fistra Stringfellow and Adqwean Sun Kist, born in Wivenhoe, Essex, on 20th July 1988.
Luminous is this mind, brightly shining, but it is colored by the attachments that visit it. This unlearned people do not really understand, and so do not cultivate the mind. Luminous is this mind, brightly shining, and it is free of the attachments that visit it. This the noble follower of the way really understands; so for them there is cultivation of the mind.
My little Siamese has died within the last hour. She stopped eating the evening before last and didn't drink yesterday. She still enjoyed being cuddled yesterday morning. During the afternoon and evening she responded to being stroked. I meditated with her on a cushion on my lap. She lasted the night, having not left the cushion beside the Aga, and was still responsive this morning. I sat on the floor and chanted to her and she tried to purr - her voice had gone. She moved her head against my hand when I stroked her. Then I left the kitchen at 1pm, leaving the wonderful little Chinenese chanting machine on quietly - 'Namo Quan Shi Yin Pu Sa'. When I went back at 2 she was dead - had died shortly after I left the room I think - rigor mortis had set in. She is wrapped in a towel now, somewhere cooler, with the chanting still going on. I will give her a Buddhist funeral tomorrow afternoon.
Scots count cost of plastic bags. Thanks, Steve. I have a number of calico bags I use, plus some of those heavy-duty ones from Sainsburys'. Also I take any of the thinner ones I get down to the local charity shops for re-use.
I have recently been reading a book about Gengis Khan. He invaded Iraq too. The poor Iraqis have had a very hard history – more wars than enough going back to the beginning of history. Now we hear that at least 100,000 civilians, mostly women and children, have been killed by the current military operations since the “coalition” moved in

Here the night is closing in:
From the western rim of the world
Merely a pale glow remains.
In a sudden squall
A million raindrops pound my window.
Tomorrow all will be fresh and clean
And the sun will smile again.
