Millions of people are using meditation to help not just their minds, but also their bodies. But what is meditation and why are so many people drawn to it? What does science say about how it might work and whether it can actually help?

In the final, and most personal, film in the Alternative Therapies series, Professor Kathy Sykes investigates the ancient practice of meditation. It's a journey that leads her to examine her innermost feelings, and one which takes her to meet scientists working at the very frontiers of knowledge about how the brain functions.

The film begins in the foothills of the Himalayas where Kathy learns basic meditation from Buddhist monk Matthieu Ricard. She also travels to the US where she learns how her body physically responds when she is meditating.

brian haw wins channel 4's most inspiring political figure award 2007

The Parliament Square peace protestor, Brian Haw, has won the
UK's
Channel 4's 2007 award for the Most Inspiring Political Figure.

Mr Haw attended the ceremony on 7 February hosted by
Channel 4, in
association with the Hansard Society. He gave
a rousing acceptance
speech before an invited audience of
Members of Parliament, Peers and
journalists.

The award ceremony will be broadcast on Channel 4 at 7pm
on Saturday 10
February and repeated on 13 February.

On Vox: music and the end of an era

42 - not just The Answer but also the age of Top Of The Pops - and tonight we've just watched the last one. This show was so much part of my life when I was younger - it started when I was eighteen - though I have to admit that, in later years, there were some styles of music that I didn't like at all. Well, that's to be expected.

One of Britain's leading documentary makers has attacked television's obsession with Islamic terrorism, claiming it has done nothing to dispel myths surrounding al-Qaeda and is too willing to take the government line on the 'high' level of the threat.

ER actress plays down age remarks

Actress Alex Kingston has said parting comments about TV show ER, in which she claimed producers thought she was too old to stay, were "tongue in cheek".

Kingston, who plays surgeon Elizabeth Corday in the US drama, said statements she made were "taken out of context".
