I don't see anything here indicating that we are evolving to be more compassionate - only that currently some level of altruism is in-built now. We might be evolving the other way.


Of course Simon is right - we will find it difficult to know what direction we are going in now and in the future, but in the past being a member of a group would be advantageous for all sort of survival reasons and therefore the altuistic gene would be passed on more often as opposed to the bugger off gene.
